Scouts and Venturers teams from across New Brunswick gathered in Fundy National Park this past weekend, October 24-26, 2008, to participate in the 43rd annual Star Trek Scouting competition.
"Star Trek" provides Scout (11 to 14 year old) and Venturer (15 to 18 year old) age youth an opportunity to compete in outdoor skills and games. Scouts programs are co-ed and allow boys and girls to participate together in a challenging outdoor program. This weekend thirty teams of Scouts from Saint John, Kennibecassis Valley, Hampton, Sussex, Petitcodiac, Miramichi, Moncton and Dieppe participated in outdoor activities and showed off their talents such as fire starting, rope work, orienteering, tracking, as well as opportunities to test their leadership, team work and communications skills. Their were also opportunities for fun with overnight time obstacle courses, pumpkin carving , wide games and firing lashed-wood catapults.
"Scouts and Scout Leaders camping at Star Trek this year experienced relatively warm and dry weather, which is quite rare for this time of year" commented Garth Holder, event coordinator from South East New Brunswick Scouts. "The dry weekend was a welcomed change from the last two years of wet and stormy Star Trek weekends. The good weather allowed for almost all youth to finish the games into early Sunday morning, which is quite an accomplishment for the younger sections of Scouting."
This year's winners of Star Trek, for both Scout Patrol and Venturer Company, come from St. Michaels Scouts, Moncton, NB. Scouts Emily Crompton, Emily Nickerson, Keegan Eatmon, Nick Tower and Matt Wiseman placed first in the Scout category and Venturers Graham Ereaux, Jordan Franchville, Gina Ford, Dan Logan and Cody Wilson placed first in the Venturer category.
