A Hike in the Woods

by Keegan Eatmon

We arrived Friday night at Chegnecto South camp site in the pouring rain. Everyone watched for moose on the trip to Fundy, especially Lorne! We stayed warm and dry by the wood stove, on top of the picnic tables! Saturday morning we packed our backpacks and headed down the Maple Grove Trail to Point Wolf Road. The rain had stopped and we hiked in the warm sunshine.

We ate our lunch while exploring the former group camping site, which was called MicMac. What a disappointment that this fabulous site has been closed. We continued down Point Wolf Road to the Foster Brook Trail. The hike into the Foster Brook wilderness camp site was a challenge, but everyone got there in one piece. The Point Wolf River was flowing heavily from all of the recent rain. Sleep came easily after supper and some fantastic camp fire stories!

Garth had everyone up BEFORE the crack of dawn on Sunday. The hike back out the Foster Brook Trail was as challenging as the hike in. As we hiked down Point Wolf Road to get to the Coastal Trail, we spotted a salmon with a transmitter in the brook that was really cool! Water flowed down the Coastal Trail while we hiked it, making it really slippery. Garth showed us how the forest was reclaiming the land at the old Matthew’s Head homestead. Amazing! We continued along the Coastal Trail to the pool. Along the way, we found evidence that a Coyote had traveled the trail before us! Some Scouts were so exhausted at the end of the Coastal Trail that they actually had to be carried out of the trail!! As you can imagine, everyone slept well in their own beds after a challenging 28 km hike with all of our gear in the packs we carried on our backs!

Alex enjoyed the challenge
