Two hundred Scouts, Venturers and Leaders from across New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island gathered in Fundy National Park this past weekend, October 26-28, 2007, to participate in the 42nd annual Star Trek Scouting competition.

"Star Trek" provides Scout (11 to 14 year old) and Venturer (15 to 18 year old) age youth an opportunity to compete patrol against patrol in outdoor skills and games. Youth were challenged over the weekend with traditional activities such as fire starting, rope work, orienteering, and camp craft skills, as well as in other non traditional projects that would test team work and leadership skills. Teams carved pumpkins, created songs, fired catapults, captured flags and participated in a Scouting Jeopardy Quiz and a Mouse Trap Games, all towards earning points for their team's score.

The Star Trek event is highly competitive, and the winners in Scout and Venturer categories gain bragging rights as best Patrol or Company for the year for their efforts. The Scouting competition includes troop presentation, enthusiasm, team work, and communication along with successful completion of the event as part of the Scout patrol's or Venturer Company's score.

St. Michael's Scouts from Moncton, which included Scouts Emily C., Zac, Stephane, Josh P. and Eric placed first in the Scout category and St. Michael's Venturers from Moncton, comprised of Desmond, Anh Minh, Charlie and Dean placed first in the Venturer category. Riverview Scouts and Kensington PEI patrols placed a very close second and third respectively in the scouting category.

Chocolate River Scouts, Jared, Alicia, Colby, Joe, and Kathleen placed first in the afternoon orienteering competition with a score of 200pts out of a possible 240pts.

Scouter Ed Casey was awarded the Area Commissioner Award for his contribution to the obstacle course installed along the trail.

The weather cooperated with warm temperatures and sunny skies Saturday and Sunday, however, Saturday evening and night activities were subject to yet another Fundy National Park wet and windy night. Approximately 15 mm of rain fell during events.
